Abstract
A heat exchange coil assembly fitted through an opening in a tank 7 heats a fluid in the tank 7 by passing a fluid that is heated by solar radiation through coils 1, 2 of the assembly. The coil may have a smaller diameter coil 1 and a larger diameter coil 2 larger than the hole so that it may be fitted in the tank 7 by screwing into the tank 7. The coil assembly 1 may have an immersion heater or additional heat exchange coil 4 and a thermostat 5. The coils may be made from any suitable material, diameter or material thickness and any suitable number of coils to define any suitable length may be used. The coil assembly may be used in existing or new tanks and may be removable to permit serving and maintenance.
Description
HEAT EXCHANGE COIL FOR EASY F1TTTNG AND REMOVAL INTO EXISTING OR NEW TANKS
WITHOUT LOSS OF FUNCTIONALITY.
Description
This invention relates to a heat exchanger that may be fitted into an existing tank without modification to that tank.
The primary application is to allow the transfer of hot water from a solar panel to an existing hot water storage tank without the need to carry out modification to the tank or ancillary plumbing.
Most existing water heating solar panel systems need a new tank or modifications to existing plumbing to facilitate the transfer of heat from the solar panels to existing water storage and this entails considerable extra expense, Some systems require the fitting of a heat exchanger to the outside of an existing storage tank. These systems are inherently bad at transferring the heat to the water having to pass through extra pipe walls to achieve their purpose.
This invention overcomes these problems by the simple expedient of fitting a new coil into an existing tank. This is achieved by removing the electric immersion heater and replacing it with either a combined immersion heater and coil or just a coil or coils.
The replacement coil/immersion heater is fitted into the same size of thread or flanged fitting as the existing immersion heater.
The outside diameter of the heat exchange coils may be bigger than the existing threaded hole but is easily fitted into the tank by winding it in.
When the coil has been fully wound into the tank it is secured in the existing threaded or flanged hole by the use of a cap. As already mentioned this cap may also contain an immersion heater as per the original that has been removed thus achieving the addition of a highly efficient heat exchanger without the loss of any functionality.
This way of achieving efficient heat transfer can be applied to any sort of tank and or working fluid for any purpose. The tank opening can be for any purpose and of any type or method sealing or fixing.
The heat exchange coils may be made from any type of material that is fit for purpose and be of any diameter or material thickness.
The overall diameter and number of coil turns may be as necessary to achieve the most cost effective and efficient heat exchange as required.
This design of removable coil may also find use where designed into new tanks for instance where due to corrosion or blockage it may be necessary to be able to remove or replace the coil for maintenance or servicing.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
FIGURE I shows the complete coil assembly.
As shown in Figure I the coil consists of a tube wound in a spiral I of one or more overall diameters 2 and attached to a tank sealing/attachment cap 3 with optional electric immersion heater/additional heat exchange coil/e 4 and or thermostat 5.
FIGURE shows a single coil assembly winding into a tank opening.
As show-;; in Figure the heat exchange; coils 5 are iLcwr, wound through a flange 6 mounted on the tank 7. The opening in the tank is of a smaller overall diameter than the overall diameter of the coils.
