Abstract

The heat exchanger (1) is fitted in the bath/shower cubicle drain pipe (2) and uses heat from the waste water to preheat the mains supply to the shower water heater. The heat exchanger is only suitable for use with showers that use electric water heaters or combi-boilers, which heat the water on demand.

Description

<Desc/Clms Page number 1>
DOMESTIC SHOWER WASTE WATER HEAT EXCHANGER 1. I conceived the idea for the invention because the combi-boiler, that supplies the central heating and domestic hot water, in my home is of an insufficient capacity to heat water for the shower to a comfortable temperature. This problem only manifests itself during the winter months when the mains water supply to the house is colder. It occurred to me that an efficient way of preheating the water would be to recover heat energy from the shower waste as it left the bath/shower cubicle by means of a heat exchanger.
2. This invention will only provide energy savings when used in conjunction with water heaters that heat water on demand i. e. electric showers and combi-boilers and in applications where the waste water goes directly to drains l. e. domestic showers.
3. It is important that the heat exchanger is situated close to the bath plughole/shower cubicle drain in order to maximise the heat recovery. It is also important that the heat exchanger remains flooded and that there is sufficient coil surface area to make the heat transfer effective.
4. The invention is made using normal materials associated with domestic plumbing and is of a size and shape to fit under a normal bath and fit into the existing plumbing.
5. A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: FIGURE 1 shows a typical arrangement when incorporated with an electric wall mounted shower heater unit-side elevation.
FIGURE 2 shows the heat exchanger in detail - 3rd angle projection 6. As shown in Fig 1 the heat exchanger (1) is fitted into existing pipework (2) underneath the bath (3). The cold supply (4) to the tap remains untouched, however the cold supply (5) to the shower water heater (6) is plumbed via the heat exchanger (1). A U-bend type water trap (7) is fitted on the outlet side of the heat exchanger (1) to ensure it remains flooded. This serves to maximise heat transfer and prevent odours passing back up through the drain. The hot water supply from the domestic boiler (8) remains untouched.
7. Fig 2 shows the heat exchanger (1) in detail with a view through the top panel. The cold water tubenest arrangement (9) can be seen. Note Direction of Flow arrows.
8. An alternative embodiment of the invention, used in conjunction with a combi-boiler, has not been depicted as the drawing would be cramped on A4 paper. However it would work equally as well.

Claims (5)

  1. CLAIMS 1. A heat exchanger that recovers heat energy from waste water and uses it to preheat the mains water supply to a gas/electric water heater.
  2. 2. A heat exchanger as claimed in Claim 1 that could be inserted into existing plumbing.
  3. 3. A heat exchanger as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 that uses gravity to provide the flow of waste water.
  4. 4. A heat exchanger as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 or Claim 3 that is only suitable for use with an electric shower heater or combi-boiler, not a stored hot water system.
  5. 5. A heat exchanger substantially as herein described above and illustrated in the accompanying drawings
