Abstract
The tyre has a coloured strip of rubber 3 incorporated into the moulding, to sit just below the surface of the tyre that comes into contact with the road. The coloured layer will preferably be fluorescent yellow or green and will show through when the tyre is almost upon the legal limit.

THE SMART TYRE
The invention involves a tyre which when close to the legal limit of tread depth shows a coloured rubber built into the tyre, through the entire tread and the Tread Depth Indicators.
Tread Depth Indicators are already in use in tyre manufacture but are the same colour as the tyre itself.
Many instructions to the 'lay person' involve checking the tread depth of the tyres with such antiquated techniques as the pattern of a certain coin The invention provides not only the 'lay person? with an immediate indication as to the lyres legality? but also a more definite roadside indication to police officers.
Once the coloured layer starts to show through the normal colour? whether in strips or patches, the car owner is alerted to the tact that the tyre needs aticntion or will soon become illegal. Similarly, police officers an see the colour of the tyre much easier, especially if working at night.
Preferably? the coloured strip will be fluorescent in yellow or green. This will allow it to be easily seen by people when glancing at the wheels in a routine check, then allowing people to actually get down and look at the Tread Depth Indicators.
Fluorescent colour will also aid police of Iicers when first lowing round the vehicle at night with a torch or in streetlight.
The preferred configuration of the tyre is shown in Figure I, the accompanying drawing.
In Figure 1, the tread I is shown as a cross section, with Tread Depth Indicators 2 clearly shown within the tread pattern The Smart Stap 3 is a coloured layer of rubber added to the tread compound and after extrusion will be then resident within the tyre, until such time as it is revealed through natural wear and tear.
Claims (2)
1. A Tyre that includes a coloured lubber strip built into the tyre under the surface that corrects with the row
2. Atyre as claimed in claim I that when wears down to the legal limit shows the coloured rubber through so it is visible.
