Abstract

239,613. O'Donnell, R. June 14, 1924. Baling-presses.-Relates to means for permitting the clearing of a baling-press for scrap metal when the head and the casing have become wedged by the material being baled. The head 3, Fig. 1, is carried by the plunger 2, and reciprocates in a rectangular box 4, the cover 5 of which is adapted to be drawn into the position shown in broken lines. The head of the plunger is notched ur corrugated at 9 to correspond with corrugations 10 on the box and is formed with guide arms 13 corrugated at 14. In use, the box is filled, the cover closed and the plunger 2 is moved to the left until the head is in the position shown in Fig. 1. A second ram 12 then compresses the material vertically. If wedging has taken place, the ram 12 is retracted and the plunger 3 is advanced to the position shown in Fig. 2, so that it may be cleaned, the arm 12 supporting it in the correct position for retraction, and the head may be slightly tapered inwardly to facilitate this action. In order to prevent the plunger from normally arriving at the extended position, means such as a removable yoke 20 is placed so as to engage the headed ends of stay rods 15 on the plunger. In order that the plunger may be withdrawn at the rearward position, the sides of the box, where they contact with the guides 13, are extended at 24. To provide for wedging between the guide arms 13 and the corrugations on the extensions of the box, the latter are arranged as at 26 - - 28, Fig. 6. In a modified form of press, the plunger may be fixed and the casing adapted to be reciprocated with the ram head at its end, or the casing may be moved to clear the plunger by auxiliary plungers.
