Abstract

Spectacle lenses.-A set of bifocal lens blanks, each of which is formed by fusing a small piece of glass having a relatively high refractive index to a major piece of glass of lower refractive index, is made up of a number of series according to the base curve of the semi-finished blank. Each series comprises a number of units having the small insert of different refractive indices. Corresponding units of the several series have therefore different base curves but the same refractive index of the small insert. The invention is described in connection with bifocal lens blanks formed by fusing a small piece of glass having a plane under surface to a major lens blank having a flat 3 formed on its surface to receive the glass 2. The exterior of the lens is then ground to the selected base curve. Numerical data and tables are given in the Specification. from which the optician may determine the curvature to which the back surface must be ground to fulfil the prescription, and the extent to which it may be necessary to modify the curvature of the finished surface of the blank.
