Abstract

The spectacle frames comprise a lens holder [suitable for fitting prescription or other lenses] and sensor mounting frame 11 incorporating a sensor emitter/receiver 12, and a side frame 13 incorporating a visible and audible alarm and an external releasable connector 16. After selecting the appropriate frame sizes to fit the wearer, the ear hooks 17 and hinges 18 are adjusted to obtain a movement-free fit. The sensor circuit is adjusted to suit the wearer's blink characteristics and tolerate normal blinking. When the sensor circuit detects eye lid closure for approximately two seconds or more, the alarm circuit activates until either the power is turned off or a reset operated. The second side frame 19 is shown plain but may be alarm equipped the same as 13. If external systems are disconnected via connector 16, the frames can be worn as normal spectacles or sunglasses. <IMAGE>

Description

SLEEP WARNING-ALARM SPECTACLE FRAMES This invention relates to sleep warning-alarm spectacle frames.
Certain occupations such as driving a vehicle, piloting an aircraft, operating machinery or guarding property, can involve certain circumstances where boredom or tiredness can cause the person to start falling asleep.
An early alarm that alerts the wearer of these spectacles at the initial stages of sleep could prevent the sleep process continuing and encourage the wearer to take the necessary corrective action.
According to the present invention - the sleep warning-alarm spectacle frames, there is provided spectacle frames incorporating an eye lid monitoring system, which in the case of prolonged eye lid closure (approximatel2seconds or longer), will cause the alarm sounder/s adjacent to the ear/s to activate and if required, signal any externally connected devices.
The sensor electronic circuitry is designed to allow normal blinking to occur without any action and may be adjusted to suit individual blinking characteristics.
The sensor electronic circuitry is also designed to be immune to ambient interference and operates in an area of the electromagnetic spectrum which is invisible to the human eye, thereby not causing any distress or distraction to the wearer.
The circuitry of the sleep warning-alarm spectacle frames may be powered by an external power-pack/control unit, typically clipped to the wearers lapel or top pocket.
Due to the initial alignment requirements, the frames may have provision for suitable adjustments to the ear hooks and to the side frame hinges to allow individual fitting to be made and thus avoid movement or slipping while in use, both side frames may be alarm-equipped.
The frames would also be made in a variety of sizes to provide a wide enough range of fitting requirements and provide suitable lens apertures for the fitting of prescription lenses, or for non spectacle wearers, tinted or anti-glare lenses.
A reset function is provided to cope with false alarm situations (for example sneezing) and has a releasable connection to allow the frames to be disconnected from the external power pack and worn as ordinary spectacles or sunglasses.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, the sleep warning-alarm spectacle frames with numbered references to the main components.
Figure 2 shows the sleep warning-alarm spectacle frames in 3 views with the sensor beam identified. Note, the sensor comprises an emitter and a receiver, the receiver receives different amounts of the transmitted beam depending on whether the eye lid is open or closed.
Referring to the drawing, figure 1, the sleep warning-alarm spectacle frames comprise a lens holder and sensor mounting frame 11, incorporating the sensor emitter/receiver 12.
Side frame 13, incorporating visible alarm 14, audible alarm sounder and electronic circuitry 15, external releasable connection 16 and ear hook 17.
Side frame 19, incorporating ear hook 17. [or may be alarm equipped as 13).
Adjustable hinges 18.
After selecting the appropriate frame sizes to suit the wearer, the ear hooks 17 and side frame hinges 18 are adjusted to obtain a movement free fit. The sensor circuit is then adjusted (by means not shown, to suit the wearers blink characteristics and allow the monitoring circuit to idle in a non-alarm condition during normal blinking. Activation of the alarm occurs when eye lid closure for approximately two seconds or more is detected.
The alarm sounder/s will continue to operate until a reset is effected (from the remote power pack/control unit not shown.
If sleep monitoring is not required, the frames may be disconnected from the external power pack/control unit by separation of connector 16 and then worn as normal spectacles or sunglasses.
