Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CUSHIONS
The present invention relates to cushions.
In particular the present invention relates to cushions which can be used to provide orthopaedic support for the legs of a person in bed.
People suffering from arthritis and similar complaints frequently find it difficult to adopt a relaxed recumbent position in bed. It is usually necessary for the sufferer to lie on one side and to support the other leg by means of a pillow or cushion. Howevel during sleep the sufferer will move and perhaps turn over to lie on the other side. In doing so the support for the leg becomes displaced and has to be relocated in position.
The present invention seeks to provide a cushion which will provide support for either leg whilst the user is in a recumbent position and will remain in position in order to give the user a satisfactory nights sleep.
Accordingly the present invention provides a support cushion comprising a cushion cover having two pockets connected together by a flat section and a cushion located in each of the pockets.
The cushions can be retained in the pockets by means of pressstuds or other appropriate retaining means.
The present invention will now be more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of one form of support cushion according to the present invention,
Fig. 2 shows a plan view of the cushion cover of the support cushion shown in Fig. 1, and
Figs. 3 and 4 show the cushions for use with the cower illustrated in Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings a support cushion 10 comprises a cushion cover 12 which is closed off at ends 14 and 16 and has openings 18 and 20 which are closeable by press-studs 22.
The cover 12 comprises two pockets 24 and 26 connected together by a flat middle section 28.
In use cushions or pillows 30 and 32 are placed in the pockets 24 and 26 through the respective openings 18 and 20 which are closed off by studs 22. The completed support cushion is then located for example in a bed and the user places one leg on the flat middle section 28 and the other leg can then be supported on the most appropriate one of the cushion filled pockets 24 or 26.
For example if the person is lying on their right side, the right leg will lie on the flat middle section 28 and the left leg can be conveniently supported on the cushion filled pocket 24.
Alternatively if the person is sleeping on their left side, the left leg can be located on the flat middle section 28 and the right leg supported on the cushion filled pocket 26.
The leg which is lying on the flat middle section 28 will keep the support cushion 10 in position irrespective of the movement of the user.
Thus if the person turns over in bed during sleep one of their legs will lie in the flat middle section 28 and keep the support cushion 10 in position whilst allowing the other leg to be supported upon the most convenient one of the cushion filled pockets 24 and 26.
The support cushion 10 can be varied in length or width to provide the most appropriate size of cushion for each of the pockets 24 and 26 and also the length and width of the flat middle section 28 can be varied to suit any particular circumstances.
For example, the pockets 24 and 26 can be of differing sizes and the shape of the flat middle section need not be approximately rectangular, for example the flat middle section can be in the shape of a truncated triangle.
The cover 12 can be made of any suitable material such as cotton or man made fibre or a combination of cotton and natural manmade fibres. The cushions 30, 32 can also be made of any appropriate material to suit the user.
