Abstract
Apparatus for determining a physical characteristic of a food crop 5 e.g. vegetable or fruit, comprises a transmitter of near infrared radiation 4 e.g. at 0.9 microns, a receiver 6, a tuned circuit 8 connected to receive an electrical signal from said receiver, an oscillator 7 that controls the frequency of the the transmitter 4 and the oscillation frequency of the tuned circuit 8, and a data analyser 10 capable of comparing the output from the tuned circuit 8 with at least one reference signal of a magnitude corresponding to said predetermined physical characteristic. The apparatus can be used to sort ripe and unripe tomatoes, for monitoring a bulk crop in storage, e.g. bananas, or for monitoring crops during growth. <IMAGE>
