Abstract

The solutions are obtained by continuously and simultaneously reacting separate streams of chlorosulfonic acid and a solution of 2- hydroxynaphthalene in a water-immiscible organic solvent at about 0-10 DEG C for about 5-120 minutes while maintaining the mole ratio of chlorosulfonic acid to 2-hydroxynaphthalene at about 0.95-1.15; transferring the resulting reaction mixture to a holding vessel, maintaining it therein at about 0-10 DEG C. for about 5-60 minutes; treating the resulting reaction mixture with an aqueous alkalizing agent and recovering an aqueous solution of an alkali salt of said acid. In preferred embodiments, the compositions obtained are characterized by conversion to Tobias Acid containing less than 0.1% by weight of 2-aminonaphthalene.
