Abstract
Before feeding the cossettes to a main diffusion apparatus said cossettes 6 are treated on a conveyor 1 of a pre-diffusion apparatus by means of hot juice from the main diffusion apparatus, such juice being introduced at 10 to sprayers 11, passing to container 9, then line 15 to sprayers 16, thence to container 8 and pipe 19. The juice flow rate, the cossette layer height and the conveyor speed are so adjusted that the juice temperature at the outlet 19 from the pre-diffusion apparatus is 40 DEG C at the most and preferably about 30 DEG C. The cossette layer height on the pre-diffusion apparatus conveyor 1 is at least 1.5 m and preferably equal to about 2 m. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Pre-diffusion method for sugar-works
This invention pertains to a pre-diffusion method for sugar-works in which, before feeding the cossettes to a main diffusion apparatus, said cossettes are treated in counterflow on a conveyor from a pre-diffusion apparatus by means of hot drawing juice from the main diffusion apparatus.
Such a method is known from Luxembourg
Patent No. 43.864 in the name of the Applicant.
According to said known method, the object of the pre-diffusion is to exchange sugar between the cossettes and the juice. The juice flow rate, the cossette layer height, and the conveyor speed are so adjusted as to have the juice, which remains as hot as possible, being enriched with a maximum amount of sugar from the cossettes.
This invention is based on the notion that pre-diffusion may be used to save calories in the sugar-works when calories are available from low-temperature fluids, for instance with a temperature from 90 tot 1 05 C, in other places inside the sugar-works.
According to the invention, the juice flow rate,the cossette layer height and the conveyor speed are so adjusted that the juice temperature at the outlet from the pre-diffusion apparatus, is 40 C at the most.
In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the juice flow rate, the cossette layer height and the conveyor speed are so adjusted that the juice temperature at the outlet from the pre-diffusion apparatus, is about 30 C.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the cossette layer height on the pre-diffusion apparatus conveyor, is retained at least equal to about 1.5 m.
In a particular embodiment of the invention, the cossette layer height on the pre-diffusion apparatus conveyor, is retained equal to about 2 m.
It is to be noted that before the further treatment inside the sugar-works, said juice which is cooled inside the pre-diffusion apparatus to a temperature in the range from 30 tot 40 C, is heated again inside heat-exchangers by means of fluids at a temperature in the range from 90 to 105"C, the so-called "soft" calories of which are thus recovered. Indeed such calories would be lost if they could not be used for heating the juice again.
Other details and features of the invention will stand out from the description of a prediffusion method for sugar-works according to the invention, given hereinafter by way of non limitative example and with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The figure is a diagrammatic showing of a pre-diffusion apparatus as used for the working of a pre-diffusion method for sugar-works, according to the invention.
The pre-diffusion apparatus shown diagrammatically in the figure comprises an endless open-work conveyor 1. Said conveyor is driven by a drum 2 and guided by a drum 3.
The driving means are so designed as to have the upper reach of conveyor 1 move in the direction shown by arrow 4. A feeding hopper 5 is supplied with fresh cossettes which are fed by a weighing belt not shown.
The cossette layer height 6 on the conveyor is adjusted at the outlet from said feeding hopper 5 by means of a valve not shown in the figure.
Said height is retained to at least 1.5 m and preferably 2 m, while the cossette layer height on the conveyor from a main diffusion apparatus lies generally in the range from 60 cm to 1.2 m, and the layer height on the conveyor from a pre-diffusion apparatus for enriching the juice with sugar, is generally in the range of 20 cm.
The conveyor 1 discharges the pre-heated cossettes at the outlet 7 thereof, in the inlet (not shown) of the main diffusion apparatus.
On their full way through the pre-diffusion apparatus the cossettes are treated in counterflow by means of hot drawing juice from the main diffusion apparatus.
For this purpose, two collecting containers 8 and 9 are provided underneath the upper reach of said conveyor 1.
The hot juice from the main diffusion apparatus is fed through a pipe 10 to sprinklers 11 arranged above those cossettes lying above collecting container 9. Said collecting container 9 is arranged on the discharge side of conveyor 1, but the sprinklers 11 lie above that portion of collecting container 9 which lies on the conveyor feed side.
The juice reaching the cossettes from said sprinklers 11 passes through the cossette layer, partly in the sprinkling area 12 located underneath said sprinklers 11 and partly in the dripping area 13 located on the conveyor discharge side.
Said juice from the sprinklers 11 which is cooled by passing through the cossette layer, is collected inside collecting container 9.
A pump 14 forces that liquid collected inside said collecting container, through pipe 15 towards sprinklers 16 arranged above that collecting container 8 which lies on the conveyor feed side; two such sprinklers 16 lie inside feed hopper 5.
The juice from said sprinklers 16 is cooled by passing through the cossette layer and is collected in collecting container 8. There is thus a second sprinkling area 17 above collecting container 8.
A pump 18 forces that liquid collected inside collecting container 8, through a pipe 19 towards another part of the sugar-works where said cooled juice is first heated again and then treated for refining and crystallizing.
The time the cossettes stay inside the prediffusion apparatus and the juice flow rate are so adjusted that the juice which has at the inlet, that is inside pipe 10, a temperature of about 72 C, has at the outlet, that is inside pipe 19, a temperature in the range from 40 tot 30 C. The staying time of the cossettes inside the pre-diffusion apparatus is for example about 4 minutes.
The conveyor width, that is the horizontal dimension thereof at right angle to the movement direction, is for example about 2 m.
The horizontal dimension of the conveyor in the movement direction is dependent on the capacity required from the pre-diffusion apparatus, but it is for example about 7 m for capacities of about 3,000 tons daily and about 15 m for capacities of about 9,000 tons daily.
The diagrammatic showing of the pre-diffusion apparatus is completed by a diagrammatic showing of a box-housing 20 inside which are mounted the conveyor 1 and the collecting containers 8 and 9, and of pillars 21 bearing said collecting containers.
It is well understood that using such a prediffusion apparatus is only justified when in some other part of the sugar-works, that juice which has been cooled in the pre-diffusion apparatus can be heated again by means of so-called "soft" calories, that is calories from low-temperature fluids which were of no use up to now.
Such fluids have for example temperatures in the range from 90 to 1 05 C and are comprised of hot waters before being discharged, vapours on the way to the conden ser, or else vapours from the cooking apparatus.
Due to the juice cooling inside the prediffusion apparatus which allows to use calories which were of no use previously, there is obtained a very substantial power saving which may reach a number of live steam kilos for each sugar-beet quintal.
It must be understood that the invention is in no way limited to the above described embodiment and that many changes may be brought therein without departing from the scope of the patent application.
Claims (4)
1. Pre-diffusion method for sugar-works in which, before feeding the cossettes to a main diffusion apparatus, said cossettes are treated in counter-flow on a conveyor from a prediffusion apparatus by means of hot drawing juice from the main diffusion apparatus, which comprises so adjusting the juice flow rate, the cossette layer height and the conveyor speed, that the juice temperature at the outlet from the pre-diffusion apparatus, is 40 C at the most.
2. Method as defined in claim 1, in which the juice flow rate, the cossette layer height and the conveyor speed are so adjusted that the juice temperature at the outlet from the pre-diffusion apparatus, is about 30 C.
3. Method as defined in either one of claims 1 and 2, in which the cossette layer height on the pre-diffusion apparatus conveyor, is retained at least equal to about 1.5 m.
4. Method as defined in claim 3, in which the cossette layer height on the pre-diffusion apparatus conveyor, is retained equal to about 2 m.
