Abstract

18,198. Varty, F. L. March 1, 1915. Movable - abutment type; fixed - abutment type; valves, distributing and cut-off; working- fluid supply.-Relates to rotary internal-combustion engines of the kind having a single rotor working in concentric combustion and compression chambers, either chamber being arranged external of the other and fitted with rocking abutments or axially sliding vanes. The combustion chamber is supplied with compressed gas mixture from a reservoir which is fed by the compressor up to a predetermined pressure. The compressor may be formed with laterally sliding vanes 18 arranged within the engine rotor 1 and pivoted at their inner ends to a pin 19 housed within the shaft 3. A triangular member 21 pulled outwards by an adjustable spring 22 forces the vanes 18 against the casing walls, which are formed with abutments 17 having inlet and outlet ports 28, 29. Simple coil springs may replace the spring 22 and member 21. The compressor delivers the compressed mixture through the port 29 and non- return valve 30 into a reservoir 31, which is fitted with a valve 38, the pressure on which can be so adjusted by a screw 39 that the valve opens on the pressure in the reservoir exceeding a predetermined limit and connects the reservoir with the inlet conduit 37 of the compressor. From the reservoir 31, the mixture passes first through a lift-valve having its lift restricted by a hand-controlled cam 36, Fig. 1. and then through an ordinary cam-operated valve 32 to each inlet port 12 of the engine. The mixture is fired by a sparking-plug 14 and acts upon the rotor vanes 5, discharging finally through a port 15. The vanes 5 co-operate with rocking abutments 7, which are controlled by springs 8 and pivoted levers 9 as shown in Fig. 1. In a modification, the rocking abutment is provided with a movable sleeve, and ports are formed in both members, which are operated by the rotor vanes to form a suitable cut-off valve for the engine.
