Abstract
23,741. Kennedy, M. H. Nov. 17. Fire-escape type of apparatus ; ropes, arranging, tensioning, and guiding. - In a rope fire-escape, the rope 17 is coiled on a spool 15 revoluably mounted in a casing on a bolt 11 connecting the front and back portions 7, 5 of the casing. Disks 16 are mounted between the casing a n d the spool. The bolt 11 is provided at one end with a nut 12 and at the other with a threaded disk 13 fitted with a lever 14, by rotation of which the plates 5, 7 can be brought closer together to retard the motion of the spool 15. A band 8 also connects the plates 5, 7, the loose ends 9 of which do not quite meet, leaving an outlet for the rope. Pivoted to pins 20, connecting extended portions 19 of the plates 5, 7 are gripping-members 22, 23 provided with toes 24 which normally rest on the loose portions 9 of the band 8, but which when brought together depress the toes, causing the portions 9 to engage the rims of the spool flanges and thereby checking the rotation of the spool. A block 26 is connected to one of the gripping-members and is provided with a hole 27 serving as a guide for the rope. In use, the loose end of the rope is attached to a window &c., the person or persons descending being attached to a projecting portion 6 of the casing and the descent regulated by the lever 14 or the gripping-members 22, 23 or both.
