Abstract
15,910. Maurice, M. S. July 18. Buoyancy, increasing; sinking, preventing. - In order to prevent foundering, a vessel is fitted with a number of metal air tubes or pear-shaped chambers, such as a, permanently or detachably secured to the outside of the hull. In order to supply additional buoyancy,a number of large canvas and leather bags may be inflated under pressure and attached to the vessel. Sinking may also be prevented by the use of bell-shaped vessels, air being imprisoned as the ship settles down, and the ship's boats may be slung upside down for the same purpose. Gas balloons may also be used. A boat may be fitted with a continuous air chamber running faround outside under the gunwale.
