Mechanical-spade and like implements. - A digging or hoeing machine comprises a main frame 1 provided with steering-handles 8 and supported at its front end on main wheels 2 and at its rear bv a castor wheel 3. The main frame 1 carries a transverse frame 11 which is adjustable in slides by a hand-wheel 15 engaging a screw on the transverse frame, the wheel 15 being secured to the main frame through a cushioning spring. A shaft 9, mounted in the frame 11, has three cranks 10 each of which pivotally carries a head 18 in which is clamped a bar 19 having adjustably secured thereto at its front end a hooked tool 21 having two independent teeth. The rear end of each bar is a sliding fit in a guide 23 pivoted on a transverse shaft 5. The shaft 9 is rotated from an internal-combustion motor 25 through a gear-box 33, a cardan joint 26, a shaft 27, and bevel gear. When hoes are substituted for the forked tools shown, the hoes are carried by curved arms pivoted, on members on the bars 19 and provided with cushioning springs; stops are provided to prevent the hoes penetrating too deeply into the soil. The machine may be driven by an electric or a transmission cable in place of the internal-combustion motor shown, or it may be drawn by animal power.
