Abstract

1501682 Microcapsules MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 6 Jan 1975 [7 Jan 1974]41385/77 Divided out of 1501681 Heading C1A Microcapsules are made by adding a precursor material comprising an aqueous solution, dispersion or sol of one or more ceramic metal oxides (or compounds calcinable to form a ceramic metal oxide agitated to an organic dehydrating liquid, so that the dehydrating liquid is maintained in contact with droplets of the precursor material to extract rapidly at 20‹ to 40‹ C. the major amount of water from the droplets; drying the resulting spherical, gelled, porous, microcapsules to remove liquid from within, and firing the dried product to produce spherical ceramic microcapsules the wall or shell of which encloses a single hollow, is homogeneous and is made of non-vitreous ceramic comprising polycrystalline metal oxide or amorphous metal oxide convertible to the polycrystalline form upon further heating. In particular a process is described in which the precursor material is added to a swirling organic dehydrating liquid having a limited solubility of 3 to 50 wt. per cent for water at about 23‹ C., and wherein the major amount of water is extracted from the droplets within 30 secs. at 20‹ to 40‹ C. which are subsequently dried and fired to yield a product, the predominant amount (e.g., 85-95%) of which is in microcapsule form. Suitable organic dehydrating liquids are alcohols with 3-6 C atoms (e.g., nbutanol, sec-butanol, 1-pentanol, 2-pentanol, 3 - methyl - 2 - butanol, 2 - methyl - 2 - butanol, 3 - methyl - 3 - pentanol, 2 - methyl - 1 - propanol, 2,3 - dimethyl - 2 - butanol and 2-methyl-2-pentanol and cyclohexanol); ketones (e.g. methyl-ethyl ketone); amines (e.g. dipropylamine); and esters (e.g., methylacetate), and mixtures thereof. Various non-vitreous materials (defined as those which are not derived from melts) which may comprise the microcapsule walls form the subject-matter of parent Specification.
