Abstract

Ceramic microparticles are described which contain at least 85% of microcapsules or exist entirely in the form of microcapsules, said microcapsules being spherical or representing elongated or oblate spheroids. The wall of the microcapsules is of uniform thickness and composed of a ceramic polycrystalline metal oxide or an amorphous metal oxide which can be converted into a ceramic polycrystalline metal oxide by heat treatment. The microcapsules are filled with gas, a liquid or a solid or they are evacuated. The microcapsules are obtained by treating a dispersion or a sol of a corresponding metal oxide with a liquid organic dehydration agent, the metal oxide-containing droplets being converted into corresponding liquid-filled microcapsules which are then dried in such a manner that as few as possible of the microcapsules are broken. The particles can be used to prepare compositions, by incorporating them in a matrix on the basis of a metal, plastic, elastomeric or ceramic material.
