Abstract

1439411 Attachments for spreaders STOTHERT & PITT Ltd 20 March 1974 [21 March 1973] 13576/73 Heading B8H A spreader (S) is attached to the lifting tackle (L) of a crane jib (J), Fig. 1 (not shown), by means of an attachment 1 which comprises a frame 2 of inverted U-shaped box structure having a boss 3 in which there is a bore 4 for receipt of a cargo hook (H), and an axle (13) extends between the arms 7 of the frame 2, Fig. 4 (not shown), on which a rope receiving drum 14 is rigidly mounted, a wire rope sling 27 being anchored at a position intermediate its ends to the drum 14 by means of a clamping portion 16 which engages with a swaged ferrule 27<SP>1</SP> on the sling 27, the sling being wrapped in opposite directions around the drum 14 and being adapted at its ends for connection to the spreader (S). Rotation of the drum 14 is effected by means of hydraulic actuators (17) mounted at the free ends of the axle 13, Fig. 3 (not shown), such rotation permitting a variation of the inclination of the spreader (S) on the lifting tackle (L). Slewing of a spreader mounted on the sling 27 is effected by means of a frame 31 which is rotatably mounted on the frame 2 through the intermediary of bearings 30, the frame 31 being held against rotation by means of cables (33) attached to its arms 32, Fig. 1 (not shown), and the frame 2 is rotated relative to the frame 31 by means of a motor 36 which is mounted on the frame 2 and which drives a slew gear 37 in mesh with a ring gear 34 supported on the frame 31, operation of the motor 36 causing orbital motion of the motor 36 and slew gear 37 about the ring gear 34, thereby rotating the frame 2 and thus slewing the spreader mounted on the sling 27.
