Abstract

1428828 Rotary kilns ISHIKAWAJIMAHARIMA JUKOGYO KK 18 May 1973 [20 May 1972 4 Oct 1972 8 Jan 1973] 23799/73 Heading F4B Apparatus for burning powdered materials, e.g. for making cement, comprises a rotary kiln 16, Fig. 4, a furnace 1 for calcining the powdered materials prior to their being fed to the kiln, and a duct 15, for providing hot combustion air to the furnace 1 fed from the exhaust gas duct of the kiln and a second duct 6 supplying combustion air to the furnace, the exhaust gas duct 15 opening into the duct 6 through a throat 25, Fig. 3, controlling the rate of flow of exhaust gas. Duct 6 has a damper 27 controlling the amount of air. The air in duct 6 normally comes from a clinker cooler 18, but an ambient air inlet 29 is also provided normally closed by a damper 28. The calcining furnace Fig. 1 is fed with combustion air through duct 6 and has three separately adjustable burners 2, 3, 4 in the top. Raw meal is fed into the furnace at 5 and the shape of the furnace is such that the meal follows a swirling path in the flame of the burners before leaving in a calcined state through the outlet 7. It then passes through a separator 11 to the inlet end of the kiln. Raw meal passes to the furnace through suspension preheaters being fed at 19 into duct 12 and carried to cyclone 8 which feeds it into duct 13, thence to cyclone 9, duet 14, and cyclone 10 to the furnace 1. The hot gas for the preheaters comes from the exhaust duct of furnace 1, the powdered material being separated in cyclone 11. The kiln 16 is heated by a burner in the lower end hood 17 and the fully burnt cement is cooled at 18 by air which is afterwards passed by duct 6 to the furnace 1 as described. There may by a dust separator in this duct. A fan 23 reduces the pressure in the preheater so that air and exhaust gases flow into the furnace 1. During start-up, and in the event of break-down of fan 23, overheating is prevented by opening the damper 29 to admit cold air to the furnace 1, the hot air from the cooler 18 being taken away by a fan 31. A damper 30 in outlet duct 22 is closed to stop the gases flowing through the pre-heater.
