Abstract

1428700 Modulating light DEUTSCHE SPIEGELGLAS AG 31 Dec 1973 [20 March 1973] 60175/73 Heading H4F In a display cell of the type comprising a liquid crystal layer between two glass plates each carrying a transparent electrode layer on its inner surface, at least one electrode is shaped by etching, and in the etched area(s) a transparent insulating material prevents the liquid crystal material contacting the glass plate and imparts a homotropic orientation thereto. As particularly described the insulating material is laid down as an integral layer before deposition and etching of the electrode layer. It may be formed by dipping the plate into an organic solution of a precursor thereof followed by pyrolysis, e.g. to give SiO 2 or TiO 2 , and is preferably one quarter of a visible wavelength thick. When unaddressed, the entire layer, of nematic material, assumes a homotropic orientation, and dynamic scattering occurs at electrode areas when addressed. It is said that in the absence of the insulating layer, the molecular orientation of the unaddressed cell varies between electrode and etched areas with a resulting non-uniform appearance.
