Abstract
1426875 Ammonia oxidation initiation system IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 18 May 1973 [5 June 1972] 26130/72 Heading C1A NH 3 oxidation with air to produce nitrogen oxides using a particulate cobalt oxide catalyst is initiated by heating the space upstream of the catalyst with a hot gas heated by combustion of H 2 within it. As shown H 2 and air are injected tangentially from spargers 82 and 84 respectively into the space above a circular bed 24 of cobalt oxide catalyst. In an alternative arrangement the H 2 may be fed through the lower sparger 84. The H 2 /air mixture is ignited by spark plug 94. The NH 3 /air reaction gas stream is fed into the top of the reactor at 11 before starting the H 2 flame.
