Abstract

1,135,967. Acetylene. MONSANTO CO. 27 Jan., 1967 [28 Jan., 1966], No. 4261/67. Heading C5E. In a process for the partial combustion of hydrocarbons in the gas phase in which the hydrocarbon is mixed with an oxygen-containing gas in a mixing zone from which it passes to a reaction zone via a plurality of channels, at least one of the channels is provided with means for imparting swirling motion to the gas mixture, said means within the channel being located nearer to the reaction zone than to the mixing zone. Various types of swirler are illustrated. The hydrocarbon feed may be a paraffinic hydrocarbon, and in the example natural gas is partially burnt and the gaseous mixture then water - quenched, the products comprising mainly acetylene, hydrogen and carbon monoxide.
