Abstract

1419819 Air atomizing fuel burner W W VELIE 2 Aug 1973 [22 Aug 1972] 36801/73 Heading F4T An air-atomizing fuel burner assembly has an air-atomizing nozzle 14, Fig. 2, receiving liquid fuel via line 46 and primary air under pressure via line 18 to atomize the fuel, and a flame spreader 66 for location in the gaseous or hydroxyl combustion zone of the combustion flame to stabilize and shape the flame. Flame spreader 66 is a disc of stainless steel or ceramics with a planar flame engaging surface located at a distance X from nozzle 14 about equal to the spreader diameter D. The fuel level in open-topped container 64 is maintained so that a thin film of fuel forms over the nozzle head 60 and air aperture 62, the fuel/primary air spray inducing a secondary air inflow between legs 70 supporting a flame conduit 74 acting also as a radition shield. The primary air is supplied to nozzle 14 by a compressor 10, Fig. 1, at a pressure set by a regulator. The pressure and vacuum sides of compressor 10 are connected via restrictions 36, 38 to a reservoir 12, restrition 38 being larger than 36. During a burning cycle the pressurized air forces liquid fuel from reservoir 12 to the nozzle, the fuel flow rate being adjustable by air regulator 22 and by fuel control 48. When the fuel in reservoir 12 reaches level 58 a float 52 closes a switch 54 to energize a solenoid, thereby shutting a normally-open connection from the atmosphere via filter 32 to the suction line 26 of compressor 10 and initiating a reservoir-refill cycle during which the vacuum applied by compressor 10 to reservoir 12 causes fuel flow thereinto from a remote source 16 via filter 44 and non-return valve 42 until the level 56 in reservoir 12 is reached when the float 52 opens valve 24 and a new burning cycle starts. Burning cycles of, for example, 10 minutes may be separated by reservoir refill cycles of 10 seconds, for example.
