Abstract

1403475 Folding sheet material INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 16 Aug 1973 [5 Sept 1972] 38795/73 Heading B8R In a zigzag folder, a web 6 formed with spaced lateral weakening lines to define sheets 8 is introduced by rollers 9, 11 to a curved guide 24 which brings it into contact with chains 12 moving slightly faster than the web feed, the lower run of the chains sagging towards a stacking platform 18, the sheets being stacked with alternate fold lines abutting guide means 40, 22. The guide means 40 is adjustable by rotating a shaft 32 between a position adjacent the shaft and a position 20<SP>1</SP>, according to the distance between the weakening lines, that part of the lower run of the chains to the right of the right-hand guide means being supported on a ramp 42. In the case of light-weight paper, belts 50 having projections 52 are moved into a position to engage and assist the descent of the fold lines to be stacked against the guide means 22. As the stack increases in height, the table 18 is lowered by a lead screw 62 rotated by a motor in response to a signal generated when the stack prevents a horizontal beam of light from reaching a photo-cell 60. In another form, Fig. 1 (not shown), the right-hand guide is fixed in its rightmost position, and the belts 50 and ramp 42 are dispensed with. The apparatus can be used to stack separate sheets.
