Abstract
1303165 Stacking sheets XEROX CORP 8 May 1970 [12 May 1969] 22291/70 Heading B8R An apparatus for stacking documents comprises a transport system including a belt 62 having a sloped first section for engaging the documents 12 delivered thereto, e.g. from a web printer and cutter (10), Fig. 1 (not shown), and for transporting them to a tray 98 to form a stack 13, such that the documents enter the stack at an angle 0 to the plane of the sheets in the stack, the belt having a second section 62<SP>1</SP> substantially parallel to and in contact with the top of the stack, such that the trailing edge of each document entering the stack is forced down on the top of the stack thereby preventing interference with the leading edge of a succeeding document. Documents 12 may be fed via belts 14, 52 and guides 54 to the nip of belts 62, 64 and engage an adjustable stop-plate 80 of a stacker bin 96 housing the tray 98, a microswitch 83 or photo-electric device sensing the height of the stack and causing intermittent lowering of the tray via a slow motor 110, clutch 114, shaft 115 and chain 122. When a magnet 100 on tray 98 activates a magnetic reed switch 84, a solenoid 130 moves a device 132 to divert documents to an alternative bin 146, the full tray 98 triggering a reed switch 88 which actuates motor 116 to raise the tray 98, via chain 122, to its initial position for removal of the stack. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), documents are inverted before being stacked. A combination of the embodiments shown in Figs. 2 and 3 may be used.
