Abstract

1403394 Intra-uterine device inserter A H ROBINS CO INC 6 Oct 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 46264/72 Heading A5R An inserter for positioning an intra-urterine device (LU:D) comprises an elongate body 10 having an I.U.D. engagement portion 12, an intermediate stem portion 14 and a handle 16. The engagement portion 12 has a part of shallow concave saddle shape which serves as a retention seat 18 to support an upper peripheral ring portion of an I.U.D. 20. A neck 22 extends from the end of the. body to the retention seat 18. A second retention seat is formed at this junction at the end of the body and has a curved terminal portion 24. The second retention seat lies below and supports the lower surface of the I.U.D. during insertion. Use of the inserter is illustrated in Figures 4-7 (not shown) and when the I.U.D. has been placed in position, disengagement of the inserter is achieved by rotation of the inserter about its long axis through 90‹. An I.U.D. (Figure 2, not shown) comprising a pear shaped perimetral ring (28) having a membrane (30) disposed laterally across the central portion of the ring and a plurality of downwardly extending spurs (35) formed on the lateral edges of the ring (28) is disclosed.
