Abstract

1488659 H 2 S-removal; Stretford liquors BRITISH GAS CORP 15 Jan 1975 [16 Oct 1973 18 Jan 1974] 48084/73 and 02547/74 Heading ClA H 2 S is removed from gases or non-polar liquids by oxidation to elemental sulphur, by contacting the gas or liquid with an aqueous alkaline redox liquor containing (a) at least one water-soluble salt of an anthraquinone disulphonic acid, (b) at least one water-soluble compound of a metal, e.g. Fe, alkali metal or ammonium vanadates, which is capable of existing in at least two oxidation states, and (c) at least one water-soluble aromatic polyhydroxy compound. The redox liquor may also contain (d) a monohydric phenol. In the examples, Stretford liquors were used which contained NaHCO 3 and Na 2 CO 3 , and as component (a) the sodium salt of an anthraquinone disulphonic acid; as component (b) sodium metavanadate, as component (c) hydroquinone, and as component (d), phenol and ortho-, meta- and para-cresols. The solutions were used to remove H 2 S from "sour gases", using air to regenerate their oxidizing potential.
