Abstract

1482134 Ion-exchange chromatography DOW CHEMICAL CO 6 Aug 1974 [6 Aug 1973] 34660/74 Heading B1H A method of chromatographic analysis of a plurality of ionic species in solution, the species having a common valence sign, comprises adding the solution of ionic species to a first ion exchange resin bed in which the first ion exchange resin is a high performance resin and has a specific ion exchange capacity of from 0.005 to 0.1 milliequivalents per gram of resin, and separating the plurality of ionic species by eluting them from the first resin bed with a solution of a developing reagent, the first ion exchange resin and the developing reagent being preselected to cooperatively facilitate chromatographic separation of the ionic species; passing the effluent from the first ion exchange resin bed through a second ion exchange resin bed, the second ion exchange resin of which is of a preselected nature, geometric configuration and sufficient amount to cause the developing reagent to be retained at ion exchange sites thereon or to be converted to a weakly ionized form (as defined) substantially without destroying the separation of the ionic species, and has an ion exchange capacity that is at least 5 times that of the first ion exchange resin; and quantitatively detecting each separated ionic species exiting from the second ion exchange resin bed. "Weakly ionised" is defined as providing insufficient ions to interfere and includes inter alia a solid precipitate taking no further part in any reaction. The process is applicable to analysis of surface waters, waste streams, blood serum, urine and fruit juices.
