Abstract

1471183 Powder coating compositions of aminoplasts and hydroxy- or amido-resins MONSANTO CO 28 May 1974 23533/74 Headings C3R and C3P A curable pulverulent resin composition having a sintering temperature of at least 40‹ C. comprises the product of mixing 15-30 p.b.w. of (i) an aminoplast as cross-linking agent with correspondingly 85-70 p.b.w. of (ii) a polymer having alcoholic OH and/or amide groups, wherein the aminoplast (i) has a glass transition temperature of -10‹ to 100‹ C. and is obtained by condensing a methylol- -urea or -aminotriazine having not more than 1 free -NH group per molecule with (a) a C 1-4 aliphatic alcohol and (b) a further alcoholic and/or amido compound of number average molecular less than 500, the molar ratio of methylol compound to reactive groups in (b) being 2 : 1-1 : 2 when (b) is monofunctional, or 2 : 1-1 : 1À5 when (b) is polyfunctional, at least 50% of the methylol groups being condensed with (a) or (b), at least two of them with (a). Preferably the polymer (ii) is of molecular weight 500-10,000 and has a glass transition temperature of 60-100‹ C., and is a polyester of acid number 1-25 and hydroxy number at least 5 or an acrylic copolymer. In Examples 1-9 an MF resin having 5À5 methylol groups (3 methylated) or 5À8 methylol groups (5À5 methylated) per molecule, or a benzoguanamine-formaldehyde resin having 4 methylol groups (2À7 butylated) is condensed i.p.o. citric acid with an equimolar amount of hydrogenated bisphenol A, ethylene glycol, toluenesulphonamide, terephthalamide or benzamide, or with a styrene/allyl alcohol copolymer. In Examples 10, 11, 14 and 15 these are mixed, just above the higher of the two melting points in 3 : 7 or 2 : 8 wt. ratio with a hydroxypolyester from neopentyl glycol, trimethylolethane and isophthalic acid or an acrylic resin from styrene, methyl methacrylate, butyl methacrylate and hydroxyethyl methacrylate or acrylamide, a commercial flow additive and optionally TiO 2 . The cooled products are milled to 20-150 Á and electrostatically sprayed on to steel panels and baked at 175‹ C. for 30 mins.
