Abstract
1463612 Coating compositions DOW CHEMICAL CO 8 March 1974 10573/74 Heading C3P [Also in Division B2] A colloidal polymer latex which will form a heat-sealable film or coating is produced by polymerizing in aqueous dispersion a mixture of (1) at least 80 wt. per cent of vinylidene chloride, based on the total weight of monomers used, (2) 0À1 to 5 wt. per cent based on the total weight of monomers used of a water soluble ionic monomer of the formula wherein R is vinyl or alpha substituted vinyl; Z is a group of formula Q is a C 1-8 alkylene or arylene hydrocarbon group having its valence bonds on different carbon atoms; and M+ is a hydrogen ion, an alkali metal ion, an ammonium group, an amine cation or a quaternary ammonium group, and (3) optionally one or more monoethylenic comonomers, and incorporating into the latex before, during or after polymerization, from 0À5 5 wt. per cent (based on the polymer solids), of (a) an adduct of an aliphatic alcohol or aliphatic acid and ethylene oxide, said adduct having the formula wherein R is C 4-18 alkyl, Y is -O- or n is an integer of 4-25 and Z is H, (b) a polyoxyethylene sorbitan fatty acid monoester containing 10-20 moles of ethylene oxide derived units and the fatty acid containing 12- 18 carbon atoms, or (c) an alkyl phenol olefin oxide adduct of the formula wherein R 1 is H or alkyl, R 2 is alkyl, the sum of carbons in R 1 and R 2 is 8-20, Y is H or -CH 3 , n is an integer of 6-40 and R 3 is H or -CH 3 . Alternatively the latex may be formed into a coating or film, which is then coated with either of (a), (b) or (c) above.
