Abstract

1455843 Laminates SCAPA-PORRITT Ltd 24 April 1974 [31 Jan 1973] 4780/73 Heading B5N [Also in Division D1] A paper-makers felt comprises one endless belt formed from a body of non-woven fibrous material having a hydrophobic surface layer having a surface energy of less than 33 dynes/cm., and a backing layer which is thicker and of greater water take-up capacity than the surface layer. The hydrophobic layer may consist of intrinsically hydrophobic fibres (polytetrafluoroethylene, fluorinated ethylene-propylene copolymers, polypropylene or blends thereof or with non-hydrophobic fibres (wool, nylon or polyester). Hydrophobic character can alternatively or additionally be produced by the application of hydrophobic material to the fibres before formation of the layer or in the layer. A polysiloxane or fluorine containing polymer may be adhered to the fibres. Alternatively a chemical bond is effected between the fibre and the hydrophobic agent. Polyamide fibres may be treated with a solution of triphenylmethane triisocyanate or 2,4 or 2,6 tolylenediisocyanate followed by vinyl fluoride, pentadecafluorooctylacrylate or polydimethylsiloxane prepolymer. Fibres may be treated with pentadecafluorooctylacrylate, vinyl fluoride or polymethylsiloxane prepolymer in the presence of a free radical former such as t-butyl peroxide, dibenzoylperoxide, hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, persulphates and cerium salts or proceeded by treatment with ozone. Polyamide polyester or polyolefin fibres may be treated with difluorocarbene generated by in situ pyrolysis of sodium chlorodifluoroacetate or chlorodifluoroacetic acid. Silicone oil or a compound containing 1 to 4 fluoroalkyl groups attached to an organic radical may be added to the melted polypropylene to produce fibres having a surface energy of 26 dynes/cm. rather than 32 dynes/cm. In Example 1 the belt comprises a base layer woven from polyester and polyamide yarns, an intermediate layer formed by carding 6 cm. polyamide fibres and a surface layer formed by carding 6 cm. polypropylene fibres. The layers are laminated together by needling a solution of an air-curing polydimethylsiloxan is applied to the polypropylene surface by a lick roller. In Example 2 the polydimethylsiloxan is applied to the polypropylene fibres before they are carded. In Example 3 the surface layer consists of polyamide fibres treated with pentadecylfluorooctylacrylate and t-butyl peroxide. In Example 4 the intermediate layer comprises 60% polypropylene and 40% wool, the polypropylene fibres used to form the face and intermediate layers being treated with ozone and then with polydimethylsiloxane.
