Abstract

1455482 Crash bags for passenger vehicles NIPPON SOKEN Inc 26 Feb 1974 [27 Feb 1973] 8599/74 Heading B7B A crash bag comprises a bladder 4 which is distended in the event of a collision by the inflation of chambers 6 formed adjacent the bladder wall. During inflation, air is sucked from the passenger spaces into the body 8 of the bladder through apertures 7. The arrangement allows the bladder to be distended using less gas than would be necessary to inflate the whole bladder, and, by sucking air from the passenger space, ensures that there is no harmful pressure rise in that space. In the illustrated embodiment, the chambers 6 are formed by the bladder wall and by a synthetic fibre insert 5 which is sewn to the bladder. To distend the bladder, communication is opened between a compressed gas bottle and a diffuser 2 so that gas is injected into the open ends of the chambers 6 from diffuser apertures 3. When a vehicle occupant is thrown against the distended bladder, gas is expelled directly from the body of the bladder through the apertures 7, and gas is also expelled from the chambers 6 through the apertures 7 after first passing round the edges of the insert 5. In a modification, Figs. 6 and 7 (not shown), the inflation chambers are formed by tubes in a bladder insert, the tubes being connected directly to the diffuser apertures. In this case, when an occupant is thrown against the bladder, gas is expelled only from the body of the bladder.
