Abstract
1452571 Monocarboxylic acids HOECHST AG 22 Aug 1974 [24 Aug 1973] 36942/74 Heading C2C High molecular weight saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids are prepared by adding to a molten olefine (16-70C) or a mixture thereof, from 2 to 15% by weight of a saturated aliphatic mono- or dialcohol (10-40C) optionally in the form of an ester of a fatty acid (2, 3 or 16 to 40C), and then oxidizing the resulting mixture with aqueous chromosulphuric acid. The chromosulphuric acid may contain 50-140 gm. of CrO 3 and 300-650 gm. of H 2 SO 4 per litre, and a temperature 60-180 C. may be used. Decyl, dodecyl, tetradecyl, cetyl, stearyl and behenyl alcohols, glycol and polyglycol monoalkyl ether and synthetic (Ziegler) alcohols, and dialcohols may be used, and examples describe the oxidation of a commercial mixture of α- olefines (24-28C).
