Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a fatty acid ester of a polyalkylene glycol useful as a thickening agent for aqueous emulsion, etc., and having high molecular weight and improved thickening effect, by using a mixed acid catalyst consisting of phosphorous acid and a protonic acid stronger than phosphorous acid.
CONSTITUTION: (A) A polyalkylene glycol is made to react with (B) a linear fatty carboxylic acid (e.g. stearic acid, etc.) in the presence of (C) a mixture of phosphorous acid with a protonic acid stronger than phosphorous acid (e.g. sulfuric acid etc.) as an esterification catalyst, to give the desired compound. The preferred weight ratio of phosphorous acid to the strong acid is 3:7W7:3.
