Abstract
1452104 Implantable surgical pump SIEMENS AG 2 Aug 1973 [10 Aug 1972] 36828/73 Heading A5R [Also in Divisions C7, F1 and H1] Apparatus for supplying medicaments or the like to a human or animal body comprises a container providing storage space for a medicament and having an outlet for the passage of medicament from the container to the body; a variable-volume vessel arranged so that increase in its volume reduces the storage space of the container, thereby causing medicament to pass out of the container via the outlet; and electrical means operable to promote an increase in the quantity of fluid in the vessel to increase its volume. The electrical means may comprise electro-osmosis or electrolysis devices. A housing 1 is made of, or covered by, a material impervious to liquid and compatible with body tissue, e.g. epoxy resin. The interior of the housing is divided into chambers, 3, 4 by a liquid-impervious, elastic membrane 2. Preferably the membrane 2 and the inner surface of chamber 3 are metallised. Housing 1 is implanted or carried outside the body and chambers 3, 4 are filled by an injection needle, which may be passed through the skin into tapered bores 25, 26 with valves 27, 28 respectively. To increase the volume of chamber 4, a window is formed in the wall which is closed by an electrically chargeable membrane 9 sandwiched between electrodes 10, 11 which establish an electric field through membrane 9, so that water and body fluid pass through the membrane into chamber 4. Membrane 2 is displaced so that medicament is forced slowly and continuously out of chamber 3, through a tube 6, and out through a porous plug 7 at a point where the medicament is required. Electrode 11 is shielded by a tissue-compatible membrane 12. Current is supplied by a battery 13 situated outside the body. The anode may be zinc, cadmium, aluminium or glucose, and the cathode may be silver/silver chloride or oxygen/carbon electrode. When a glucose/oxygen electrode combination is used for the supply of insulin for a diabetic patient, the current between the electrodes depends on the glucose content of the patient's body tissue, and the system may be made self-regulating A body value influenced by the medicament may control the discharge of medicament. In a modification, chamber (4), Fig. 3, not shown, is constructed with a bellows which is expanded by the generation of gas electrolytically and thus forces medicament out of the chamber 3.
