Abstract

1331647 Quaternary ammonium phosphonates ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 20 Nov 1970 55339/70 Heading C2P [Also in Division C5] A quaternary ammonium salt of a phosphonic or thiophosphonic acid ester having the formula wherein X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP> and X<SP>3</SP> are the same or different and are O or S atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrocarbyl, and one of R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogen atom and the other is a hydrocarbyl group, is obtained by heating a tertiary amine with an alkyl halide (RX) to form the quaternary ammonium halide [N(R) 4 ]<SP>+</SP>X<SP>-</SP>, mixing the latter with silver oxide in water to form a solution of the quaternary ammonium hydroxide and then reacting the latter with the phosphonic or thiophosphonic acid ester (I). An example is given for the production of the tetra n-butyl ammonium salt of the n-butyl ester of n-butyl phosphonic acid, the latter being obtained by refluxing trin-butyl phosphite with a small amount of NaI to form (BuO) 2 P(O)Bu which is then added to a mixture of dibutyl phosphite and aqueous NaOH and the mixture refluxed and then acidified to form the desired ester. The salts are useful as additives for lubricating oils.
