Abstract

1358478 Zinc salts of dialkyl dithiophosphates E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 9 March 1972 [11 March 1971] 11008/72 Heading C2P [Also in Division C5] The invention comprises an oil soluble mixture of liquid zinc salts of dialkyl dithiophosphates which contains at least 12% by weight of zinc and which comprises zinc salts selected from (a) mixed basic zinc salts of dialkyldithiophosphates of formula [(RO) 2 PSS] 3 - Zn 2 OH containing 4 to 13 different alkyl radicals R which have an average carbon content of 3À5 to 4À5 and (b) mixtures of the mixed salts (a) with mixed neutral zinc salts of dialkyldithiophosphates of formula [(RO) 2 PSS] 2 Zn, containing 4 to 13 different alkyl radicals R which have an average carbon content of 3À5 to 4À5 carbon atoms, and wherein the alkyl radicals of (a) and (b) are C 1-13 primary or secondary radicals and wherein the concentrations of said alkyl radicals are (1) a maximum of 30 mol. per cent of each C 1-3 alkyl radical, (2) a maximum of 58 mol. per cent of the total C 1-3 alkyl radicals, (3) a maximum of 70 mol. per cent of each C 4 radical, (4) a maximum of 82 mol. per cent of the total C 1-4 radicals and (5) a maximum of 25 mol. per cent of secondary radicals, and wherein (b) contains a maximum of 75% by weight of mixed neutral salts. The mixtures (a) may be prepared by dissolving a corresponding mixture of dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids in aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution and adding an aqueous solution of a zinc salt. The mixtures (b) may be prepared by reacting a corresponding mixture of dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids, dissolved in a suitable solvent, with water and zinc oxide, or by physically mixing a mixture of basic salts (a) with a mixture of neutral salts. The mixed dialkyl dithiophosphoric acids required as starting materials may be prepared by reacting a suitable mixture of alcohols with phosphorus pentasulphide. A mixture of neutral zinc dialkyl dithiophosphates, which may be used in preparing a mixture (b), may be prepared by reacting a corresponding mixture of dialkyldithiophosphoric acids with zinc oxide in an organic solvent. In a comparative example a physical mixture of three basic salts was obtained by mixing basic zinc dimethyldithiophosphate, basic zinc diisobutyl-dithiophosphate and basic zinc di-nhexyldithiophosphate. The mixtures (a) and (b) of the invention may be used as additives in lubricating oil compositions.
