1324427 Electrode assemblies NIPPON SODA CO Ltd 4 Dec 1970 [6 Dec 1969] 57804/70 Heading C7B An electrode assembly comprises two substantially vertical electrode plates and a diaphragm situated therebetween and in mechanical contact therewith, each electrode plate having a plurality of discrete passages therethrough, each passage having a lower end at the surface of the electrode plate adjacent the diaphragm and an upper end at the surface of the plate remote from the diaphragm, the passages being such that in use of the assembly, gas liberated on the electrode plates rises through the passages. The electrode plates may be held in a former, embodiments of plate disclosed being expanded mesh, louvered plates with flat or curved slats, or a punched plate as shown in Fig. 4, or similar forms Figs. 1-3 and 5, (not shown); the electrode plate may be Ti coated with pt. In a cell for electrolysis of alkali metal chloride, Fig.13, anodes 27, 28, of the louvered type are in contact with diaphragm 30, as shown, which encloses wire mesh cathodes 29, there being outlets for H 2 , Cl 2 , and alkali, at 37, 39, and 38 respectively. Bubbles of Cl 2 formed at the anodes are directed away from diaphragm 30 and upward by the passages in the anodes, and thus out of the electrolyte 35.
