Abstract

1516196 Diaphragm cells BASF WYANDOTTE CORP 15 Aug 1975 [16 Aug 1974] 34015/75 Heading C7B Electrodes 24, 26 are separated by an endless belt diaphragm 36 supported at its edges by polymeric (surfaced) supports 32, 30 such as to form a separate electrode space within the diaphragm. In the vertical chlor-alkali cell shown the anodes 24 extend into such spaces and a wire screen or perforated cathode 26 has vertical compartments joined by upper and lower sheets. Alternatively the cathode may comprise fingers which extend down between the anodes which are then themselves totally encased by the diaphragm/support arrangement; in this case the openings in upper and lower supports 30, 32 are staggered and the cathode may be lifted independently from the cell, Fig. 4 (not shown). The diaphragm may be of polyolefin, a fluorocarbon or ABS resin, optionally filled with asbestos,.glass fibres, mica, kaolin or carbon black. The supports may be made of or coated with (e.g. metal substrate) the same polymers and joined to the diaphragm by friction welding, heat sealing or mechanical fit. An inert screen may be placed between the diaphragm and the cathode and/or anode.
