Abstract

1319583 Gripping tools A F WIGLEY 10 Sept 1970 [11 Sept 1969] 44806/69 Heading B4W [Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A tool for use in withdrawing the headwork locking cover of an underground valve (See Division F2) has concentric sockets 67, 68 having bayonet slots 70, the horizontal legs of the slots in socket 67 extending oppositely to those of socket 68. After engaging lugs on the locking cover in the slots 70, the sockets are rotated relative to each other in opposite directions to trap the lugs and allow the cover to accompany axial movement of the tool. Handle 61 on socket 68 has a detent 66 engageable in recesses in a block 64 secured to socket 67 and carrying a handle 60 extending through slot 60a. In Fig. 20, a tool for unthreading the valve headwork following removal of the cover has an hexagonal socket 99, allowing unthreading of the headwork, and a sleeve 98 which can be lowered, following withdrawal of pin 96 from apertures 95, 104, to cam pins 102 inwards to engage in a groove in the headwork. Pin 96 will then be inserted through apertures 95, 104a allowing the headwork to be withdrawn by raising the tool. In Fig. 18, the headwork 134 is removed using a tool having fingers 125 depending from an operating spindle 124 threaded to a sleeve 126 which is rotatable by a tool (129) engageable with teeth 127 on the sleeve. Lowering of the sleeve by the tool (129) causes fingers 125 to grip the headwork for removal.
