Abstract
1399599 Mixing apparatus NORWICH LORD MAYOR ALDERMAN & CITIZENS OF 15 June 1972 [24 June 1971 23 March 1972] 24478/72 and 24479/72 Divided out of 1399598 Heading B1C Mixing apparatus for making a complex polymeric alkali metal-aluminium silicate soluble in hydrochloric acid for use as a coagulant comprises a mixing chamber 4, three inlets 14, 20, 26 for liquids, an outlet 5 spaced from the inlets and leading to an ejector 6, and means 7 within the chamber for mixing under high sheer. The means 7 may be a three-bladed stirrer in the proximity of the inlets rotated at a speed in excess of 1000 rev/min; in a modification (Fig 4, not shown) it is a rotor with blades (54) having an angle of 10-20 to the horizontal, surmounted by a stator having blades (53) with an angle of 10-20 to the vertical. There may be three, six or other number of stator and rotor blades. Preferred dimensions for the apparatus are recited. As shown, the apparatus is duplicated, only one being in use at a time. In operation water is supplied to the inlet 14 through a flow meter (13, Fig 2 not shown) having a needle valve control; sodium silicate to inlet 20 through a control valve 81; and aluminium sulphate to inlet 26 through control valve 24, the product being mixed with raw water to be treated in ejector 6. A time control 40 at intervals doses the water supplied to inlet 14 with hydrochloric acid, from container 43 to dissolve any solids formed. A water treatment plant, (Fig 5 not shown), including the apparatus, has a pump (61) supplying raw waiter to the ejector 6, a sedimentation plant (63) and filtration plant (64); a vertical sludge blanket or horizontal sedimentation device may be used.
