Abstract

1393875 Closure plugs METAL BOX CO Ltd 10 Aug 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 39134/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B8] A container assembly including a container wall 13 has at least one orifice 14 which is closed by a one-piece resilient plastics closure 15 consisting of a plug portion 18 with a pull tab 16, one end of which is formed into a finger ring (17), Fig. 1 (not shown). The free end of plug 8 is upset by a heated mould tool (not shown) to form a rivet head 22 with a radial flange 23 to overlap the container member 13 which may be coated on its inside face with a protective lacquer. Adhesive may be applied to the inner surface of member 13 around the orifice 14, alternatively the stopper material may contain additives to promote adhesion. On opening the closure, fracture occurs at 25 leaving the flanges 23 attached to the inside of the container number 13 and the rivet shank 24 is removed with the pull tab 16. In a modification, Fig. 10 (not shown), a boss 61 is mounted opposite the plug 18 which when inverted can reseal the container. Further modifications Figs. 13-18 (not shown) show a plurality of openings and plug portions; in the lid of a vacuumized container, one plug (97) acting as an anchor when vent plug (96) is pulled out to break the vacuum. The closures may be of polypropylene or nylon. Further modifications show the orifice 14 of the container number 13 may be curled inwards to form a sharp edge to assist in weakening the flange portion 23 and provide notches in the underside of the flange during upsetting of the plug end.
