Abstract

1393698 Electro-photographic copying apparatus HOECHST AG 28 July 1972 [30 July 1971 2 June 1972(2)] 35426/72 Heading G2H A method of measuring or measuring and controlling the toner concentration of a developer circulating in an electro-photographic reproduction machine comprises preparing from the circulating developer a sample for measurement the sample being either the developer itself or a material composed of or enriched in the toner component of the developer. The sample is so arranged that the toner therein can be estimated as a proportion of the required toner concentration of the developer. In a measurement step the sample is irradiated by radio-active radiation that is affected by the toner in a manner measurable for estimation of the toner present. The effect of the sample on the radiation is measured and, in any subsequent controlling step, based on the measurement a quantity of further toner is added to the developer to raise the measured toner content to the required value. As shown in Fig. 1 the zone where developer collects in the cascade apparatus there is located on a holder 15 a radio-active preparation 16, radiation from which is reduced in strength by the collected developer material 8 and by the wall of the hopper which is thin at this point; the radiation then strikes a detector 18, and the arrangement is such that signals from this detector control the supply of toner. The reduction in the strength of the radiation depends upon the concentration of toner in the developer material.
