Abstract
1387815 Friction welding BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd 20 April 1972 [20 April 1971] 10293/71 Heading B3R A method of welding a fluid-flow constricting ferrule 5 in a tube 1, when the ferrule comprises a metal, e.g. nickel alloy which is not easily weldable to the tube metal, e.g. mild steel, comprises friction welding a piece of the first metal to a piece of metal more easily weldable to the tube metal, machining the composite block to a ferrule shape having a smaller diameter bore 11 in the first metal part 7, placing the ferrule with the part 7 innermost in the end of tube 1 and preferably abutting a shoulder 4 in the tube, and welding, e.g. by T.I.G. welding, the other part 6, which may be mild steel, to the tube 1 at 12. The part 6 may project outwardly or retreat inwardly from the end of the tube to assist welding. Alternatively the ferrule may have a radially outwardly extending flange at the end of part 6 by which it may be friction welded to the end of tube 1. The tube 1 may be one of a plurality of tubes, each welded to a tube sheet or plate 13.
