Abstract
1380376 Treating exhaust gas CHEMICAL CONSTRUCTION CORP 12 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 11856/73 Heading F1B Apparatus for treating exhaust gas comprises a cylindrical container 20 with a central honeycomb gas passage element 11 and an annular honeycomb gas passage element 21 around the central element, each element comprising a plurality of parallel linear gas passages aligned parallel to the longitudinal axis of the container, at one end of the container an inlet 7 for exhaust gas to the central element and an outlet 26 for gases coming from the annular element and at the other end a passage from the central element to the annular element which passage contains an inlet for air, the walls of the passages of the central element being coated with a catalyst for reduction of nitrogen oxide to nitrogen and the walls of the passages of the annular element being coated with a catalyst for the oxidation of carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Both elements are composed of lithium aluminium silicate, or alumina. The catalyst is zinc, nickel, platinum, copper manganese, vanadium, cobalt, chromium or iron, or a catalytically promoted oxide of one of these elements or a mixture thereof. A preferred combination includes copper, cobalt, nickel and manganese. The central element may be separated from the annular element by a baffle, or the central and annular elements may be parts of a single body in which a number of passages on the periphery of a circle centred on the axis of the body have been filled or plugged at one or both ends with e.g. alumina and insulating cement. Exhaust gas from an engine 3, which may have air 5 mixed with it flows through the inlet 7 and the central element 11 to a chamber defined by a baffle 17, where it is mixed with air issuing from a pipe 16, and then flows through the annular element and through the outlet 26. The elements may be made as a series of circular corrugations or alternate cylindrical and sinuous elements.
