Abstract
1376304 Photo-electric apparatus HIRDBROWN Ltd 28 Feb 1972 [1 May 1971] 12585/71 Heading G1A [Also in Divisions G2 and G4] In a detector device, e.g. for counting objects 10 on a conveyor belt 9, light from a filament lamp or GaAS diode 6 is conducted down a branch 5 and main stem 3 of an optical fibre element 2, issues from the stem end to be incident on a reflector 11, and returned light is conducted down a second branch 4 to a photo-cell 7. The "outward" and "return" fibres may be distributed randomly throughout the cross-section of the main stem 3, Fig. 2 (not shown). Alternatively the two branches, each composed of a plurality of fibres, are each formed from a semicircular segment of the stem, Fig. 3 (not shown), from two diametrically opposed quadrants of the stem, Fig. 5 (not shown), or from inner and outer concentric portions, Fig. 4 (not shown). The fibres may be of glass, or of transparent plastics such as unpigmented acrylic polymer. The photo-cell output is amplified and supplied to e.g. visual and audible indicators, counting devices and alarms.
