Abstract

1375862 Viscometer BRITISH PETROLEUM CO Ltd 3 Feb 1972 [30 March 1971] 8119/71 Headings G1N and G1S A kinematic viscometer comprises a hydraulic resistance 5 being a tube at least 50 cms. long and of circular cross-section bore and an internal diameter of 2 to 5 mm., a pump 3 adapted to transmit a liquid through the tube, a differential pressure transmitter 7 connected in parallel with the tube and a densitometer connected in series with the tube. It is stated that absolute viscosity equals kinematic viscosity times density, so that since the differential pressure across the tube represents the absolute viscosity of the liquid flowing through it, the kinematic viscosity may be calculated from the signals on lines 8, 17 from the transmitter 7 and densitometer respectively. The transmitter 7 produces an electrical output signal. The densitometer is a cell 10 containing air bubbler tubes 11, 12 at different depths in the cell and the differential pressure between the tubes is adjusted by valves 13, 14 until air bubbles out at the same rate from the tubes when the differential pressure transmitter 16 transmits a signal on line 17 representing density of liquid in cell 10. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1246643.
