Abstract

A rheometer which comprises two capillaries of differing diameter mounted in series, fed by a constant speed pump and discharging into a chamber against a controlled pressure. Two transducer measure the pressure drop down the first and larger of the two capillaries. The capillaries are enclosed in a temp. controlled block. Used esp. for sampling a flow stream during a continuous polymerisation process, e.g. mfr. of high pressure polyethylene, to control the process w.r.t. to the viscoelastic properties of the material. The device is more precise and versatile than control rheometers operating in a closed loop discharging back into the product stream against a variable back-pressure. It is simple to construct and install.
