Abstract
1362414 Testing ordnance RHEINMETALL GmbH 17 Sept 1971 [5 Dec 1970] 43407/71 Heading F3C [Also in Division F2] An impulse transmitter for testing pieces of ordnance comprises a housing 1, Fig. 3, a cylindrical member 6 which is located in the housing 1 and receives a cartridge 9 therein, and a piston 10 which is actuable by the gases of the propellant charge of the cartridge 9 to move a gun barrel R in the recoil direction of the gun. The member 6 has outlet apertures 11 which connect to atmosphere, via a chamber 12 and a valve 26, when the piston 10 has been actuated by said gases. The volume of the chamber 12 is at least ten times the stroke volume of the piston to damp the firing blast of the cartridge. In use the barrel R is positioned over a centring cone 15, which, along with a pressure plate 16 and an elastic plate 14, is clamped to a pressure plate 13 by a tie-rod 17, the pressure plate 13 being carried by the piston 10. The transmitter, which is mounted by wheels 2 on a rail track, is urged towards the barrel R by a recuperator 5 having one end connected to the housing 1 and the other end connected to the rail track. The cartridge 9 is located in a chamber 8 of the member 6 and is detonated by a device 31 in a breechblock 7. The piston moves against the action of a recuperator spring 25 and the pressure plate 16 pushes the barrel R in the recoil direction until the resultant of all the forces on the impulse transmitter acting on the piston imparts a braking retardation thereto. The outlet apertures are uncovered and the gases escape to atmosphere via the chamber 12 and the valve 26. The piston is then returned to its initial position by the springs 25 and the transmitter is returned to its initial position by a recoil brake 4 and the recuperator 5. The braking retardation is by a device comprising an annular chamber 19b formed in a housing 19 which surrounds the piston 10, and a member 21 which is mounted on the piston. The chamber 19b and a chamber 23 formed in the piston are connected by a passage 20 and have brake fluid therein. The piston has a bore 10a having a floating piston 22 therein which is urged by pressurized gas from a chamber 24 in the piston. The chamber 19b, being tapered, is engaged by the member 21 when the piston has completed its working stroke. The braking device may be replaced by hydraulic buffer brakes 32, Fig. 5, and the recuperator spring 25, Fig. 3, may be replaced by a recuperator 33, Fig. 5, the brakes 32 and the recuperator 33 being secured to the cylinder 6 and to the pressure plate 13.
