Abstract

1361545 Recycling exhaust gas in I C engines CHRYSLER CORP 28 Jan 1972 4198/72 Heading F1B An I.C. engine comprises an inlet conduit 1, Fig. 1 a silencer 21 in a flow-path from an exhaust conduit 19, a baffle 23 defining a sound attenuating chamber 22 for a source of exhaust gas in communication with and cooler than the exhaust gas in the flow-path and a by-pass conduit 31 between the chamber 22 and the inlet conduit 11 for the recycling of cooled exhaust gas to restrict the formation of nitrous oxides during combustion. A major portion of any lead contaminents solidify in the cooled exhaust gas chamber into particles small enough to be carried in the gas stream. The cooled exhaust gas (still at 200‹-250‹ F) pre-heats the inlet air to facilitate mixing and vapourization. A control valve 41 linked to throttle 18 closes the by-pass when the throttle is at the idle or near fall throttle position and opens it through the major range of throttle positions in which a metering orifice 40 restricts the dilution to 5%-25% of the total exhaust gas flow. In a modification the valve 42, Fig. 2, (not shown) is operated by a diaphragm responsive to the pressure registered at an orifice 45 adjacent an upstream edge of the throttle 18.
