Abstract
1351924 Electrolytic capacitors PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 16 March 1973 [20 March 1972] 12731/73 Heading H1M A method of manufacturing an electrolytic capacitor comprises punching from an aluminium sheet a series of strips 7 each comprising plates 13 interconnected by bridge portions 17, the strips extending perpendicularly to carrier ribbon 5 to which they are attached by connecting tags 9, etching the plates, folding the plates of each strip upon themselves to form a folded stack (Fig. 6), anodizing the plates, depositing a semi-conductive layer thereon by pyrolysis of manganese nitrate, applying a graphite and a silver layer thereto and severing capacitor elements from the carrier strip. Preferably, before forming, e.g. during the punching operation, connecting tag 9 is folded to form a dam 19 which helps to prevent the manganese dioxide layer from contacting the unanodized part of tag 19 to which the anode lead is to be attached. The capacitors may be encapsulated, suitably as far as the cut edge of tag 9 which provides an abutment surface when the capacitor is mounted on a printed circuit board.
